Pavenet was appointed to deliver a two-phase highway improvement scheme, incorporating carriageway and footway reconstruction, drainage improvements, new kerbing, tactile paving and resurfacing.
The works were delivered under 24/7 traffic management, with careful coordination of existing utilities and highway infrastructure to ensure the project was completed safely, efficiently and to the required standards.
Phase 1: Site Preparation & Highway Improvements
Site Setup & Traffic Management
Site inductions and daily briefings were undertaken before Pavenet established the site and implemented 24/7 Chapter 8 traffic management. Carriageway, footway, drainage and resurfacing areas were marked out, with existing utilities identified using CAT and Genny, GPR equipment and statutory plans.
Excavation & Drainage
Existing vegetation and carriageway and footway layers were removed before the sub-base was excavated to formation level. New Type 1 gullies and drainage were installed, including concrete bedding and surrounds, 225mm brickwork and resin-bedded frames and covers.
Kerbing & Footway Works
New kerbing was installed to the required levels, alongside tactile paving and tactile blocks to improve pedestrian accessibility. Existing ironwork was adjusted and Type 1 sub-base was laid and compacted in preparation for the final finishes.
Surfacing & Street Furniture
Cold binder and AC6 / HRA surface course were laid, with new illuminated posts and bollards installed as part of the completed highway improvements.
Phase 2: Carriageway Resurfacing & Completion
Carriageway Preparation
The second phase continued the highway improvements with further excavation and preparation works. Existing carriageway layers were planed to a depth of 45mm, with existing ironwork adjusted to the required levels.
Surfacing Works
Following preparation, new 45mm HRA 35/14 was machine and hand laid to provide the finished carriageway surface. Carriageway joints were overbanded to create a durable and consistent finish.
Final Works & Demobilisation
Once the surfacing and associated works were complete, the site was cleared and demobilised, bringing the two-phase highway improvement scheme to completion.
The completed scheme delivers upgraded drainage, improved pedestrian facilities, new kerbing and tactile paving, enhanced street furniture and renewed carriageway and footway surfaces, providing a safer, more accessible and durable highway environment.
